DMSP Satellite

This is an image of night lights of Bali taken from the DMSP satellite. Looking at the image, it is apparent that the most night lights are located in the southern area of Bali. Inferring the lights are linked to population density, the same area should produce the most waste due to the high amount of human activity occurring in these areas. As it turns out, the most polluted and popular regions of Bali are situated in the most lit up portion of Southern Bali. An article published by The Jakarta Globe reported that the most popular areas are indeed polluted. Researcher Ketut Sundra quotes: "'The lab test results showed the presence of pollutants that exceed the environmental quality standards at all six beaches,' Sundra said. He named the six beaches as Kuta, Legian, Nusa Dua, Jimbaran, Tanjung Benoa and Canggu, all of which are located in Badung district in the southern part of Bali, an area that is particularly popular with tourists" (Kencana, The Jakarta Globe).
