Water Sheds

Aerial Photo of Seminyak

The photos above show waste that has flushed onto a beach used by many people for enjoyment and recreation. Pollution in Seminyak is considered to be equivalent to the amount in popular tourist city, Sanur, on the south-eastern coast of Bali. Not only do these beach front cities suffer from garbage pollution, but also heavy metals-such as copper, zinc, tin, and nickel.

Kuta beach is known worldwide for surfing and magical sunsets, but unfortunately the beach has taken a hit from the pollution that washes onto the beach. Pollution has gotten so sever that people were advised in March 2011 not to swim in the bacterial contaminated water, caused by the large amounts of waste washing into the ocean.

Above are images of Tukad Badung. Tukad Badung is a river that flows from higher elevations, through the capital city, Denpasar, and finally empties into the Indian ocean and Mangrove rehabilitation site. The river is so polluted that the water is no longer being sanitized for human use. Tukad Badung is just one of many contaminated rivers making its way to the ocean.

The village of Ubud, located a little north of Kuta Beach and the capital Depensar, is known for its green foliage and serene rice fields that cover the mountainous area. However, due to the recent development of shops and restaurants caused by increased tourism, issues with air pollution as well as the proper disposal of waste compromise the beautiful and sensitive physical environment.
